Описание к видео Palliative Care: History & Advocacy

Palliative Care: History & Advocacy by Dr Yvonne McMaster - 25 February 2013

Dr Yvonne McMaster is a retired palliative care specialist who helps us to better understand pain management and what happens with late stage prostate cancer. Fortunately there has been a huge change in caring for advanced disease with patients being able to plan ahead because of the range of hormone and chemotherapy drugs now available.

It is good and important to have a realistic attitude and to have what's known as an advanced care directive.

We need to remember that 'to palliate' means to relieve. It is not just for the dying. Recent research suggests if palliative care is given earlier in the disease, people live for much longer.

Yvonne makes several suggestions about things to do at this time and for advanced prostate cancer patients to know of what's available in the treatment line to relieve the pain.

Yvonne also suggests that a support group works as a form of palliative care unit as the empathy and the way the support group members accompany each other through difficult times is indicative of what palliation is all about.

Importantly for carers and family Yvonne helps us to understand what happens as a loved one is dying.

Dr McMaster has been the driving force behind increasing palliative care units to NSW with two petitions delivered to NSW Parliament to boost funding over as many years. http://www.prostate.org.au/articleLiv...
