I was alone from Pune but on the train, I met many groups so We traveled by road to Ooty from Coimbatore railway junction in the morning at 10 after finishing breakfast. We reached Ooty by 2:20 in the afternoon. if you travel by road you can see lots of views and amazing spots on way to Ooty and mountains, fog, and greenery. and roads are very narrow so bus journeys become adventures. my suggestion would be to go by bus at least once or by your own car so that you can enjoy every view on the way to Ooty.
