The Passage:

Throughout history, humankind has fought in wars. often, only soldiers witnessed battle. Hundreds of years ago, the public found out about conflicts through words and drawings. Such “news” might take months or even years to arrive.

In 1862, the US Civil War was raging. Alexander Gardner captured images with cameras. For the first time, Americans saw battlefield photos.

Eighty years later, World War 2 was underway in Europe. People at home could listen to live reports. The radio made it possible.

In the 1960s the United States went to war in Vietnam. Television brought scenes of the war into American living rooms. Some scenes were not very heroic. After 10 years of television coverage, the public turned against the war. Soon, American troops had to leave Vietnam.

Today, digital media bombards us with constant coverage of conflicts. We know what war looks and sounds like. But can anyone that hasn’t lived through it understand the reality of war?
