Akurstjarnan A. githago var áður skráð sem Ástarlogi Lychnis githago. Hún er fallegur dulfrævingur 40-100 sm á hæð með hærða stöngla og silkimjúk grá hár á grágrænum laufblöðunum. Blómin eru blárauð sem býflugur heimsækja mikið og eru falleg andstæða við litinn á laufblöðunum. Ein planta myndar í fæhulsti mörg hundruð svört hrufótt fræ sem eru mjög eitruð. Plantan vex í útjaðri ræktaðra túna sem og á bersvæði og getur verið varasöm. Þegar haustar og blómin falla af koma í ljós undir laufblöðunum þyrnar sem eru eitraðir. Yfirleitt eiga eitranir sér stað þegar fræ komast í hey handa eldisdýrum eða í korn til brauðgerðar.

Agrostemma githago, the common corn-cockle (also written "corncockle" and "corn cockle" and known locally simply as "the corncockle"), is a slender pink flower of European wheat fields. In the 19th century, it was reported as a very common weed of wheat fields and its seeds were inadvertently included in harvested wheat seed and then resown the following season. It is very likely that until the 20th century, most wheat contained some corncockle seed. It is now present in many parts of the temperate world as an alien species, probably introduced with imported European wheat. It is known to occur throughout much of the United States and parts of Canada, parts of Australia and New Zealand. In parts of Europe, intensive mechanised farming has put the plant at risk and it is now uncommon or locally distributed. This is partly due to increased use of herbicides, but probably much more to do with changing patterns of agriculture with most wheat now sown in the autumn as winter wheat and then harvested before any corncockle would have flowered or set seed. The plant was believed to be completely extinct in the United Kingdom until 2014, when a single specimen was found growing in Sunderland by an assistant ranger of the National Trust. It is a stiffly erect plant up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) tall and covered with fine hairs. Its few branches are each tipped with a single deep pink to purple flower. The flowers are scentless. Each petal bears two or three discontinuous black lines. The five narrow pointed sepals exceed the petals and are joined at the base to form a rigid tube with 10 ribs. Leaves are pale green. All parts of the plant are poisonous (githagin, agrostemmic acid). It has been used in folk medicine despite the risk of fatal poisoning. See more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agrostem...

Symptoms of ingestion include severe stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, weakness and slow breathing.

Corncockle was introduced into Britain as a contaminant of grain at least as far back as the Iron Age. It is a plant that can tolerate a range of soil types and was a weed of cereal and other arable crops. In Britain its stronghold appeared to be within rye on the light, sandy soils of the south and east of the country. Although never common it suffered a dramatic decline at the beginning of the twentieth century with the development of improved seed cleaning techniques. It is now virtually extinct in the wild. Seed can be sown onto a bare earth site in the autumn or spring. As the seed is short lived once in the soil it is probably best to avoid sowing in winter or early summer. Corncockle can be established on most soils but does particularly well on free draining sandy loams. Being an annual it requires open ground to re-establish itself, so an autumn cultivation is essential if you wish it to return. See more: http://wildseed.co.uk/species/view/4

Corncockle’s can grow up to 1 metre tall and are covered in tiny hairs. In the summer months the plant produces beautiful pink or purple flowers with delicate black lines on the petals. They can grow in various places such as fields, roadsides, railway lines and waste places. See more: http://thepoisondiaries.tumblr.com/po...
