Weak and brittle nails can affect both men and women. The cause for brittle nails can be far ranging, but often it is due to frequent exposure to water, aging and frequent use of nail polish and other nail products. Conditions such as fungal infections, psoriasis and eczema can also lead to problems with our nails. This will not only be a cosmetic concern, but can also cause discomfort. Fortunately, there are things we can do to treat brittle nails. Lets discuss some simple home remedies to strengthen our nails and improve their overall health.

1. Lemon juice can not only help to strengthen and improve the overall condition of our nails, but it will also make them more bright and healthy. To begin this treatment, mix one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a bowl. Heat this mixture for just a few seconds until it feels warm to the touch. Be sure not to apply the mixture if it is too hot and do not overheat it in the microwave. Now apply it to your nails with a clean cotton swab prior to going to bed. For best results, wear gloves and leave it on overnight. Try this remedy once daily for about 2 to 3 weeks.

2. Coconut oil is also great for improving the condition of our nails. It is especially nourishing for weak and brittle nails since the saturated fat found in coconut oil works as a tremendous moisturizer. It can also help to prevent certain nail infections. Start by slightly warming some coconut oil and apply it onto your nails. Massage the coconut oil gently and thoroughly for about 5 minutes. This will help to not only keep the nails moisturized, but will also improve blood circulation. Try this remedy 2 to 3 times daily until you have achieved your desired result.

3. Apple cider vinegar can also help to remedy brittle nails. This is due to its nutritional profile, which contains nail healthy vitamins and minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium and magnesium. The malic acid and acetic acid in apple cider vinegar can also help to fight nail infections. First, mix equals amounts of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and water in a bowl. Then soak your nails in the solution for a few minutes. Once you have soaked them, gently push down the cuticles for best results. Try this remedy once daily for a couple of days.

4. Lastly, tea tree oil can be especially helpful for brittle nails. This is especially true for brittle nails that have been caused by fungal infections since it works as a great antiseptic. Start by mixing one-half teaspoon of vitamin E oil and a few drops of tea tree oil together. Rub the solution onto each of your nails and then massage gently for a few minutes. Leave the solution on your nails for about 30 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water. Pat the nails dry and then apply a moisturizing lotion. Try this remedy twice a day for a month.
