The C-130 Hercules: what doesn't it do? From a cargo, troop transport, medevac, gunship, assault, search and rescue, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, patrolling, firefighting, to an aerial delivery plane... it's, well, not a fighter. The C 130 Hercules is one of the most versatile and classic transport aircraft in the world, initially designed to carry troops for the United States Air Force after the Korean War. Today, we use the Herc to not only land on aircraft carriers but Antarctica too. One of the signature features of the Hercules is its STOL, or Short Takeoff and Landing, capabilities, able to use extremely short runways or even dirt strips. It also has some special designs that make it such a long-lasting plane, like its turboprop engines (what exactly is the difference between single shaft and free turbine aircraft engines? And what did Clarence Kelly Johnson, the chief aircraft designer at Lockheed say about this staple? And what are the variants of the C-130 that enable it to fulfill so many roles?

Throughout this video we'll discuss many variants of the C130 Hercules: the C-130B, C130B II, MC130 E, AC 130 gunship, C130R, HC 130, and RC130 reconnaissance planes. Despite being in operation for 66 years and counting, the Hercules is still going strong. We'll also talk about what its future holds, including the C-130J Super Hercules.
