Open tight hips and low back with the yoga pose, Supta Kurmasana or sleeping tortoise. This pose is a deep hip opener and the preparation to get into the pose safely requires, back opening, hamstring opening, as well as hip opening. In this video, I will show you a modification of the pose for those of you working on getting your leg behind the head as well as modifications as you progress and continually practice this posture. You will need to warmup on your own since this video only shows the peak posture. To watch the exercises, warm ups, and yoga flow that got me into the pose, visit my Patreon on the link below.
Supta Kurmasana or sleeping tortoise is one of the poses in the Ashtanga primary series Yoga Chikitsa. To practice this yoga asana (posture), I used a chair to modify the pose as one works towards the full expression of the posture. Using yoga props like a chair and yoga blankets can be very helpful in reducing some of the challenge in the pose while focusing on the subtleties and nuances of a posture. Some of the subtleties of a yoga pose include connecting to the small movements, muscle activations, and energetic aspects of a yoga pose which help you move deeper into the practice.
Yoga poses like Supta Kurmasana from an energetic standpoint can induce a sense of surrender and calm. Of course, putting you legs behind your head may not be so relaxing if you struggle to get your legs there in the first place, however, the journey of working towards the pose is a balance of allowing and trusting the process of opening the hips while maintaining and cultivating kindness for yourself as you practice. Practitioners who try to open their hips too quickly risk injury. It is for that reason, that if you experience pain while practicing this pose, do not continue the practice. This pose is also not recommended for those working with preexisting injuries as practicing the pose may exacerbate pain.
