Chapter 21 of First Nephi continues with the theme of Nephi quoting Isaiah, specifically Isaiah chapter 49.
This is an amazing and beautiful chapter. It is the word of God through Isaiah, but is also a dialogue between God and Israel. The most exciting part is that these words are for TODAY; they are happening RIGHT NOW. Israel was not scattered in Isaiah's day so he's talking to them at this very time when they are scattered over all the earth and God is gathering them again. The chapter begins with a clarion call to all Israelite branches and tribes that are scattered.
1 Nephi 21:1 And again: Hearken, O ye house of Israel, all ye that are broken off and are driven out because of the wickedness of the pastors of my people; yea, all ye that are broken off, that are scattered abroad, who are of my people, O house of Israel. Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken ye people from far.
The Lord introduces His servant in the last days to Israel and to all the world.
1 Nephi 21:1 . . . the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;
In these verses, the Lord presents his servant to Israel and lets them know that through him he will bring them to the knowledge of the Abrahamic covenant.
8 Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
Because it's a dialogue, we have the response of Israel, although it's spoken by the Lord. Israel has thought they were abandoned and forsaken by God.
14 But, behold, Zion hath said: The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me—but he will show that he hath not.
15 For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;
Obviously Jesus Christ, is the one who has engraven us upon His hands and He is the one calling to Israel, and to all of us.
The Lord then gives further insight into His plans for Israel and how he will raise them up, bless them and gather the remnants of israel that they didn't know they had.
20 The children whom thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the first, shall again in thine ears say: The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.
21 Then shalt thou say in thine heart: Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? And who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been?
22 Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
23 And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
As we can see, the Lord will bring people that essentially the house of Israel didn't know belonged to them. Also, we see that the Lord will employ the Gentiles in gathering and raising up the house of Israel in the last days.
This is an amazing chapter of scripture and I encourage you to read and re-read it. These are the things the Lord is doing Right Now! This is all about TODAY!
Until next time, happy reading.
