In the ancient kingdom of Katak, there once reigned a powerful and benevolent king named Vishnu Madhukarnava Gajapathi. Known for his wisdom and devotion, he decided one day to hand over his vast kingdom to his sons, choosing instead to embark on a pilgrimage. With great reverence, he visited some of the most sacred sites across India, including Kashi, Dwaraka, Gaya, Sri Kurmam, and Simhachalam.

One evening, during his pilgrimage, King Vishnu Gajapathi and his entourage set up camp along the serene banks of the Vamsadhara River. That night, as the king lay asleep, he had a divine dream. Lord Shiva himself appeared before the king, revealing an ancient and mysterious story about the Madhukeswara Lingam, located at Srimukhalingam. The lord also narrated the tale of Chitragayaka and advised the king to search for his sacred Shiva Linga in the nearby forest of buttercup trees.

Upon waking the next morning, the king shared his miraculous dream with his ministers. They were overjoyed and reassured the king that such a dream was a divine blessing. Encouraged by their words, the king sought Lord Shiva's guidance again, asking him to reveal the exact location of the Linga.

Once more, Lord Shiva graced the king's dreams. This time, the lord praised King Vishnu Gajapathi as a great ruler of the Ganga dynasty, telling him that the discovery of the Linga was his destiny. The king was instructed to search diligently, for it was hidden under the forest's sacred buttercup trees.

Following Lord Shiva's instructions, King Vishnu Gajapathi ordered his soldiers to begin the search. While they explored the dense forest, something miraculous happened—a golden pigeon appeared before them. Unlike any other bird, this pigeon shimmered with a divine glow. The soldiers were astonished and tried to capture the bird, but despite their efforts, it always eluded them.

Then, the pigeon flew into a snake pit beneath a giant buttercup tree. At that moment, the king realized that this was a sign from Lord Shiva. He ordered his men to dig into the snake pit. As they dug, a dazzling light began to emerge from the earth—a light so bright it appeared like a thousand suns. There, they uncovered the sacred shrine of Lord Shiva's Linga.

Overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, the king vowed to build a magnificent temple to honor the divine Shiva Linga. However, as the excavation continued, King Vishnu Gajapathi discovered something even more astonishing. Spread across the forest were countless Shiva Lingas, said to have been consecrated by the gods themselves—Brahma, other deities, and celestial beings.

In total, the king found one crore (10 million) Shiva Lingas, an awe-inspiring sight that filled his heart with both reverence and concern. How could he build temples for all these sacred Lingas? That night, once again, Lord Shiva appeared in the king’s dreams. He assured the king that he would be blessed with an abundance of gold through a divine miracle.

The next morning, as foretold, golden balls the size of seeds rained down from the sky. This heavenly "Kankadhara," or golden rain, provided the wealth needed to build temples for the sacred Lingas, and King Vishnu Gajapathi fulfilled his promise to Lord Shiva.

Thus, Srimukhalingam became a place of profound spiritual significance, blessed by both Lord Shiva and King Vishnu Madhukarnava Gajapathi’s devotion. This holy land witnessed the first-ever golden rain, a sign of divine favor and prosperity.

Srimukhalingam stands today as a testament to the king's faith and Lord Shiva’s blessings. It reminds us that this sacred place is not only a pilgrimage destination but also the site where the first golden rain in history was witnessed.
