Austin, located on the West Side of Chicago, is the third largest community area by population, behind the Near North Side and Lake View, and the second-largest geographically behind South Deering.

According to a 2016 analysis by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, there were 99,711 people and 32,277 households residing in the area. The racial makeup of the area was 4.20% White, 84.20% African American, 0.50% Asian, 0.80% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.30% of the population.
