The Midgets (1956)
The Joe Newman Septet

The Midgets marked a step towards the progress of the flute as a jazz instrument. Its initial jazz impetus, in the middle of the 1930s when Wayman Carver introduced it in a small group within the Webb band, the Little Chicks, was met with initial hesitation. However, after the 1950s, there was a splurge of jazz flute playing. As a rule, it had been used either as a solo instrument or paired with another woodwind.

For Newman, these selections were of a more modern jazz type than had been recorded before. Previously there was a concentration on Basie-oriented swing.
