The town of Sanhe in Feixi County, Anhui Province, has a history of more than 2,500 years and has formed a unique landscape of ancient streets, alleys, bridges, ancient walls, temples, theatres, dwellings and teahouses. It is a typical "small bridge and flowing water house", and was historically a place where soldiers had to fight and merchants had to gather.

The ancient name of Sanhe was "Magpiezhu", which was first a bird island in Chaohu Lake, and became a land area on the shore of Chaohu Lake after thousands of years of water flow and accumulation. There are 10 streets and 26 lanes in the old town, with more than 180 Ming and Qing buildings still standing. The old streets are narrow and paved with smooth slabs of green stone, and the small tiled houses on both sides are covered with traces of age, with oil-paper lanterns hanging over the doors of every house.

The ancient dwellings that have been preserved, with their flying eaves and carved beams, are a rare group of late Qing Dynasty buildings in the Jianghuai region. The white horse-head walls, the double-sloped roofs covered with small green tiles, the carved and painted beams and rafters and columns, and the black and gilt plaques on the various signboards, are all full of ancient charm, as if a picture of the Qingming River was presented before one's eyes, reminiscent of the prosperous Hui merchant era.
