Refrigerant is a substance or mixture used in refrigeration systems and air conditioning units to transfer heat and provide cooling. It circulates within the system, undergoing phase changes from a gas to a liquid and back again, absorbing heat from the surroundings and releasing it elsewhere.

The primary function of a refrigerant is to facilitate the transfer of heat by undergoing phase changes at low temperatures. When a refrigerant is in its gaseous state, it absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, causing it to evaporate and turn into a low-pressure vapor. This vapor is then compressed, raising its temperature and pressure. As the high-pressure vapor flows through a condenser, it releases heat to the surroundings and condenses into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve or device, where it undergoes a rapid pressure drop, resulting in a decrease in temperature. The low-pressure liquid then enters the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the environment, repeating the cycle.
