Context - John Wilmot, the Libertine, is a man of contradictory morals. He’s the Earl of Rochester, a poet, friend and confidant to Charles II, a notorious rake, an anti-monarchist Royalist, an atheist who converted to Christianity. When he falls in love with an actress at the Playhouse, these beliefs are tested.

This scene is the prologue, where John introduces himself and his desires.
