The first permanent white settler was likely Joel Estes in 1859, though it was a British nobleman, the Earl of Dunraven, who truly put the area on the map. He visited in 1872, fell in love with the scenery, and attempted to turn the entire valley into his private hunting preserve. His efforts failed, but they brought attention to the region's potential for tourism.

The pivotal moment in Estes Park’s history came with the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. This solidified the town's role as a base camp for mountain adventures.

The most famous landmark, the Stanley Hotel, which overlooks the town, was built in 1909 by F.O. Stanley, the inventor of the Stanley Steamer automobile. He came to the dry mountain climate for his health and built the grand hotel to cater to wealthy Easterners. The hotel gained legendary fame when it hosted author Stephen King, who was inspired by the eerie, empty hotel during a snowstorm to write The Shining.
