Producers in the olden days of the film industry wanted experienced stars with recognizable names. The further you were from the image they were trying to cultivate, the less likely you were to be cast.

Major names like Clark Gable and Bette Davis were originally rejected because they didn’t meet conventional standards of attractiveness. Executives refused to give them a chance at first, but the joke’s on them now. They turned away Old Hollywood stars who are still remembered today for their beauty and skill.

A select few Old Hollywood stars had plenty of acting experience before they made it big. Judy Garland began working in the industry at the age of 3. Others weren’t so lucky; Audrey Hepburn and Ava Gardner had no experience before they became famous actresses.

Many struggled to find their breakout role despite regular auditions. Fred Astaire was told by casting directors that he couldn’t act, and Carey Grant failed his first screen test.

An unrelated talent was occasionally enough to get a studio to take notice of a future star. Rita Hayworth got noticed while dancing, and James Cagney got a contract after performing in drag.

A contract was like a golden ticket to the candy factory in Old Hollywood. It meant that you were hired by a studio that would give you regular roles that could catapult you to stardom. Many stars struggled to get one but began fruitful careers once they did.
