An introduction to Irish Low D whistle and what’s inspired me to begin learning it

World flutes, this time, the Irish tin whistle, or specifically the Low D whistle.

What can we learn by broadening our horizons with world flutes? What transferable skills are there? How do they differ? Can this help, or even derail our flute playing?

Each to their own on what type of flute, or flutes resonate deeply with an individual but for me, it’s Native style, Irish low D as featured in this video, as well as Kaval, Ney, Fujara and even simple overtone flutes.

She’s phenomenal and you’ll see a very clear difference in comparison to my early attempt having recently started to play whistles. (Had to re enforce that 🤣). She’s a truly gifted musician.
