Miamisburg, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton, holds a rich history shaped by early settlement, industrial growth, and a significant prehistoric landmark. 

Early settlement and growth

Hole's Station: Around 1797, Zachariah Hole and his family from Virginia established a community known as "Hole's Station" near the Great Miami River, building a stockade for protection.

Founding Fathers: In 1818, four Pennsylvania men sold 90 lots, laying the foundation for Miamisburg.

Becoming a Village and City: Miamisburg became an official village in 1832 and achieved city status about a century later,

Canal Impact: The Miami and Erie Canal, completed through Miamisburg in 1829, significantly boosted trade and transportation, fostering business growth along the riverbanks. 

Mound laboratory and nuclear legacy

Cold War Era: Miamisburg was home to the Mound Laboratory, a vital U.S. government facility established in 1947 and operated by the Monsanto Chemical Company.

Defense and Space: The plant played a crucial role in monitoring defense programs, producing parts for national defense, and later making power generators for space probes.

Closure and Repurposing: Production at the Mound Plant ceased in 1993, followed by extensive cleanup and redevelopment into the Mound Advanced Technology Center. 

Miamisburg mound

Ancient Landmark: Miamisburg is renowned for its prehistoric Indian burial mound, believed to have been constructed by the Adena culture between 1000 and 200 BCE.

Significance: As one of the largest conical burial mounds in the Eastern United States, it served as a cemetery and potentially a marker of tribal territories for ancient Ohioans.

Modern Day: The Mound is now encased in a park with stairs to the summit, offering panoramic views of the Miami River Valley. 

Other notable facts

Star City Nickname: Miamisburg is also known as "Star City," allegedly due to a Miami Indian chief's vision of seven stars.

Historic Downtown: Downtown Miamisburg boasts a collection of historic buildings, including the Baum Opera House, Gebhart Tavern, and the iconic Hamburger Wagon.
