Two-spirit is a modern umbrella term used by Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people in their communities who fulfill a traditional third-gender ceremonial and social role in their cultures. It is a pan-Indian term created in 1990 at the Indigenous lesbian and gay international gathering in Winnipeg. Two spirit meaning is a term "specifically chosen to distinguish and distance Native American/First Nations people from non-Native peoples."

Native American Two Spirit was not intended to be interchangeable with "LGBT Native American" or "Gay Indian" but to serve as a pan-Indian unifier for what are diverse, culturally specific ceremonial and social roles. Two spirit gender is intricately woven into the culture an cannot be seen without the context.

Since the European Colonialization of North America, the Native American tribes were vilified and destroyed, along with that their Indigenous culture. The Navajo Two Spirits and others lost their cultural role in the wake of westernization.

In this video, we will discuss what is two spirit and how it is different from LGBTQ and modern gender ideology.
