Mixing Earth Tones - Student Exercise - Scenic Art

Knowing how to mix your own earth tones is a very useful skill, even if you don't have to do it all that often. This kind of exercise helps students to better understand their colors, which will help them mix colors more accurately and with less frustration. In this video I make burnt sienna, raw sienna, burnt umber, raw umber, yellow ochre, and van dyke brown using only red, yellow, and blue.

The specific colors I used were Brilliant Red, Lemon Yellow, and Pthalo Blue from Rosco, which I got from their Scenic Sets. Check out their website!
