In honor of Chicago III turning 55 years old in just a few days, I made a brand-new story-driven video montage for the underrated, jazzy gem “Loneliness Is Just a Word.” I wanted the visuals to feel as psychedelic and layered as the music itself, blending classic footage of the band with high-tech clips of myself and others to help tell the emotional story behind the song. This big-band–inspired track was written by Robert Lamm and sung soulfully by Terry Kath, and while it dates back to the band’s early days around 1968, it wasn’t officially recorded until Chicago III in 1971. The song captures the pain of a girl leaving a guy and the loneliness that follows—feelings the band members themselves may have experienced while constantly touring and struggling to maintain relationships. Musically, it features an incredible horn arrangement and an upbeat, swinging jazz feel that contrasts beautifully with its more somber lyrics. For a bit of irony, I included a clip from Chicago’s most commercial hit, “You’re the Inspiration,” showing a similar “girl leaving the guy” moment—highlighting just how different the band’s ’80s image is from this raw, adventurous early sound. That contrast is exactly why I love Chicago so much: their range and diversity are unmatched. At just 35, my goal is to keep creating imaginative storytelling videos like this to help Chicago’s legacy live on—and to introduce new listeners to hidden gems like this one that truly deserved to be hits. #chicagotheband #terrykath #rock
