UCLA Spoken Word People of Color Tour - Janss Steps (MLK)

Описание к видео UCLA Spoken Word People of Color Tour - Janss Steps (MLK)

Inspired by the UCLA People of Color Tour, this video was created in Spring 2014 in Spoken Word and Community Partnerships, a UCLA class in the Department of World Arts & Cultures/Dance, to add to the discussion and tell important counter narratives.

The text from the original tour for this site reads: "Martin Luther King spoke here in 1965 in favor of passing SCOPE (Summer Community Organization and Political Education Project), which was signed in 5 months later by President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1970, students organized around Janss Steps against the Vietnam War and were attacked by LAPD tactical, creating a police riot that spanned from Janss Steps all the way to Campbell Hall. In 2001, at the top of Janss Steps, there was a protest by students to get the university to implement Assembly Bill 540, which grants in-state tuition to undocumented students who have completed high school in the state. The UC system was the last organization to comply with AB540 after Governor Gray Davis signed it into law."
