The visual characteristics of the halo phenomenon, in micro channel plate image intensifiers, is well documented and quite familiar.

Aside from variations in size and intensity, the concentric rings of the halo are generally unremarkable, with no discernible geometric patterns other than circular boundary lines.

That is until Photonis developed the XP6 INTENS image intensifier.

The XP6 halo exhibits a spoke like pattern visible in the primary, secondary and tertiary halo. The spoke like pattern is colloquially referred to as diffraction spikes.

The diffraction spikes visible in the XP6 halo are a product of the diffraction grating incorporated into the support structure of the photocathode

The photocathode diffraction grating and subsequent diffraction spikes are unique to Photonis INTENS technology.
