“Bud rot is a fatal disease of the coconut palm, characterized by the rotting of the terminal bud and surrounding tissues. It is caused by the virus Phytophthora palmivora and can cause serious damage to coconut, which can arrest the growth of seedlings
and be can spread by air to other trees.

Bud rot affects the palms of all ages, young palms in low-lying and moist situations are more susceptible to the disease. As a result, these incidents are reported mostly in marshy lowlands and high-humid environments. It is characterized by yellow regions on the leaf & browning in the middle portion. The soft tissues of the plant rot into a slimy mass of decayed material which causes a foul smell. The rot is surrounded by a yellow/brown border. The central rot of the stem may be found in palms with the collapse of the spear leaves. Cross and transversal sections of the rachis of the leaves sometimes reveal light brown speckles varying in width.

CONTROL MEASURES:
As a remedy, to remove the infected portions caused by Bud rot, start slowly by removing the dead central root. Dispose of them away, by either burying them in the soil or burning it. You can also spray Copper Oxychloride on the previously infected plants by using a concentration of 3 grams per liter of water. If the infected tree shows no signs of recovery, replant with a new seedling.
