India’s GST Collections Rise 9.1% in September 2025 to ₹1.89 Trillion
India’s GST collection rose1% YoY in September 2025 to ₹1.89 trillion, compared to ₹1.73 trillion in September 2024, supported by higher sales after the recent GST rate rationalisation. Domestic GST revenue increased 6.8% to ₹1.36 trillion, while import GST collections surged 15.6% to ₹52,492 crore; refunds grew sharply by 40.1% YoY to ₹28,657 crore. The net GST revenue stood at ₹1.60 trillion, showing 5% annual growth, despite large manufacturing states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka registering only single-digit growth. On September 4, 2025, the government announced a major GST reform, consolidating the six-tier structure into four slabs — 0%, 5%, 18%, and a new 40% slab for luxury and sin goods, effective September 22, 2025. Under the new structure, essentials like milk, breads, and life-saving medicines fall under 0% GST, daily-use items like toothpaste, shampoo, butter, ghee, and low-priced footwear on 5%, while household appliances, mid-segment vehicles on 18%, and luxury cars, alcohol, tobacco are on 40%.
