A small aircraft made an emergency landing in a Mesa canal Sunday morning after striking the back fence of a residence near McLellan Rd. between Val Vista and Greenfield. The incident occurred around 8:30 AM, prompting a major response from Mesa Fire & Medical, Mesa Police, and Gilbert Fire.

According to Falcon Field Airport Tower, the pilot attempted a controlled landing but clipped a block fence with pool equipment and gas lines before coming to rest in the canal. Both occupants were able to exit the plane safely, and no injuries were reported. Officials say the pilot was aware of the emergency and intentionally aimed for the canal to avoid nearby homes.

Mesa Fire & Medical classified the call as an “ALT 3” Aircraft Crash, the highest-level aircraft emergency response. Fire crews also mitigated minor fuel leaks at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing the plane turn sharply near the orange groves moments before impact.
