Sustainability in Textiles: Approaches to Conscious Consumerism— Discussion with Namrata Bhutoria

In this MAP Academy Live session, Namrata Bhutoria, co-founder of ColourAshram, offers insights into the significance of conscious consumerism in the context of our rapidly deteriorating ecologies. Highlighting the pertinent issue of water pollution, primarily caused by the pervasiveness of toxic synthetic dyes and polyester fabrics in textile production, Bhutoria explores alternative approaches to produce clothes sustainably. She also shares her experiences of research and innovation in standardising natural dyes, and highlights the ways in which consumers can tackle prevalent greenwashing practices, while being mindful of the resources which are used in the manufacture of their garments. This session is made in conjunction with our online course ‘Textiles from the Indian Subcontinent’.

About the Speaker:

Namrata Bhutoria is the co-founder of ColorAshram Foundation, and the driving force behind the acclaimed natural dyed clothing label ‘Biome Conscious Fashion’. An advocate for the transformative power of natural dyes, slow and mindful fashion, her research and innovation focus on textiles, their impact on our bodies, lives and the environment, and seeking conscious ways to bring about a positive change.

ColorAshram Foundation is a natural colour academy based in Mysore that specialises in natural dye application in a truly sustainable manner, using a technology that makes natural dyes standardised and scalable to all levels of application. It also offers comprehensive training and expert consultancy on sustainable dyeing. Its co-founder Arun Baid has two patents and over two decades of innovation in industrial natural dyeing.
