How I went from earning $7 an hour to 7-figures while In college

I remember going through this struggle when I was completely broke. My car was broken down, and I borrowed cash from my roommate Trevor's sock drawer—he had $100. It was my first year out selling, and I remember thinking, "Man, if only I could make what some people make, like 10 grand over the summer. If I could do that, I could buy a new car, pay five grand for it, and have a little money to help with my college expenses. I would be set; there would be no more fear." I kept thinking that at some point, I would reach a place where fear would go away.

Let me fast forward five years. I say this humbly but boldly because it’s true—after nearly being fired in my first two weeks from a straight commission job because I didn’t make one sale, five years later, I had earned just over a million dollars in sales commission from doing what I just showed you, with persistence. That experience became the foundation for starting my own company. Within the next five years, I took my company public in 2010. The year I did, I made $6.8 million on the day that I went public.

But here’s the principle I want to share. It’s not about the money—I want to give you some context, but the point is that this fear cloud, this belief I had that once I reached a certain level or place, fear wouldn’t find me anymore, was wrong. I remember cashing a check for $256,000 and thinking, "I’ve made it. I’m 25 years old, and I’ve made it—I can pay off my house with this check." In hindsight, I wish I had done that. But not even a week later, guess what found me? Fear. I was honestly pissed. I thought, "No, that’s not what’s supposed to happen. Why am I feeling afraid right now? I’ve made it. I’ve arrived."

I learned firsthand that no matter where you’re at or what’s going on, the fear cloud is always trying to find us as human beings. Every day, you go to sleep, and when you wake up the next morning, the fear cloud is there—you’ve got to ditch it.
