Hubble Space Telescope Captures Amazing Spiral Galaxy
The galaxy observed in this image is known as NGC 691 and is located about 120 million light-years from Earth.
This image of a spiral galaxy was taken using the legendary NASA / European Space Agency space observatory.
This galaxy is one of several thousand objects discovered by astronomer William Herschel during his incredibly fruitful work over several decades to search, describe and catalog a wide range of different galaxies and nebulae visible in the night sky - almost 200 years before it was Hubble Space Telescope launched into orbit!
The incredibly high level of detail seen in this image would probably have astounded Herschel. Hubble was able to capture the smallest details of the structure of the galaxy NGC 691 - layers of stars and spiral arms.
This was made possible thanks to a high-resolution onboard camera called Wide Field Camera 3. This camera helped capture the most amazing views of spiral galaxies available in the Hubble Space Telescope Archive.
