*Potential Utilization of Pandan Rasau (Pandanus
helicopus) as Raw Material for Dissolving Pulp for Rayon Fiber Manufacturing Industry*

Dissolving pulp (DP) is a high-quality cellulosic pulp that has low hemicellulose, lignin and resin content. DP is an important material for the manufacture of cellulosic products. DP is used for the manufacture of rayon fibers and various cellulose derivatives such as cellulose ethers (pharmaceuticals, explosives, paints, cosmetics), cellulose esters (cigarette filters, films, high-quality plastics, acetate yarns) and can be used as additives. DP demand in Indonesia currently reaches 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year and is projected to continue to increase. This increase is driven by the growth of the rayon fiber industry.

Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve is one of the potential peat hydrology area in Riau which is the habitat of pandan rasau. The potential of this pandanus has not been utilized properly. As a result of not being utilized properly, during the dry season, pandanus has the potential to dry out and become one of the causes of peatland fires. Utilizing pandanus can reduce the risk of dry pandanus leaves in peatland areas.

The DP manufacturing process involves three stages, namely pre-hydrolysis, kraft cooking, and bleaching.
