Most customers start on the Avvo homepage and search using “Practice Areas” for attorneys. An attorney’s profile will appear, often with high rated profiles at the top. This number is a calculation of information that an attorney provides to Avvo.

The information an attorney can provide to Avvo is broken down into 16 sections: an about me section, associations, your awards and licenses, cases, client ratings, contact information, your education, fees and payments, a headshot, the languages you speak, media, peer endorsements, practice areas, publications, speaking engagements, and work experience. The last is an Avvo rating badge they want you to put on your website, but it will not affect your Avvo rating if you do not use it.

Be thorough with this information, as Avvo will rate you on a scale of 1-10 based on what you provide. Other factors come into play as well, your practice areas will affect how you are categorized on Avvo. They will not sort Real Estate categories in with someone who searches for Probate attorneys.

Do not disregard your customer reviews, as customers will look at both to decide which profile to interact with. Strong reviews paired with a high Avvo score indicates an attorney is adequately qualified to handle a legal matter.
