See a glimpse into the process and history behind the art of Kyo Yuzen (traditional Japanese fabric dying):

Kyo Yuzen is a series of processes for dying silk that produce complexly-layered, vivid designs. The method was developed in the mid- to late-17th century, during the Edo period, in Kyoto. Miyasaki Yuzensai (1654-1736), who had a reputation for creating exquisitely-drawn folding fans, was encouraged by his patrons to apply his skills to kimono design. Yuzensai’s name quickly became synonymous with
top class kimono design in Japan. Combining his name and the style’s place of origin, Kyoto, Kyo Yuzen was born.

This centuries-old style was once the height of fashion, as women owned multiple kimono, and the market provided thousands of jobs to skilled artisans all over Japan. But in modern Japan, with the market diminished, these artisans working with Kyo Yuzen struggle to survive, working from one job to the next. Younger generations take jobs with more stable salaries, in modern industries, leaving this tradition behind and putting these specialized jobs in jeopardy.

At haishop, It’s our goal to create new and innovative products, through a collaborative process with local artisans. Targeting modern audiences, we hope to reestablish an appreciation for these diminishing traditional Japanese arts.

These craftsman are becoming older, and their traditional products aren’t resinating with younger generations, who have moved onto modern trends. It’s our mission to try and create a bridge between these two generations.

Without a bridge to innovate and modernize, these artisan markets could fade and be forgotten. We’re working on ways to reimage new and exciting products while simultainiously celebrating traditional crafts and the artisans behind them.

Since it’s inception, we’ve been working to create a brand that connects consumer to artisan through innovation. Our customers can purchase our products and know they are doing their part to give back to the artisan community and help revitalize a diminishing tradition.
