What is dependency injection, and should you use it? In this video I take the time to answer both of those questions. Dependency injection ends making your applications more flexible through the use of multiple configuration types (think one for production, staging, and testing). It is able to do so by implementing the inversion of control principle and via polymorphism through delegation.

There are four roles within dependency injection. The service objects are supplied to a client object. A client object then depends on interfaces to understand how to make use of the service objects. Finally an injector is used to ensure the client object has the appropriate service objects to complete its task.

We also discuss three different types of dependency injection. My favorite option is with constructor injection as it tends to be the most straight forward and fool proof route. The other two, setter, and interface end up working for very unique cases where constructor injection is not possible.

Keep in mind that dependency injection does not require the use of a library or framework. While these can speed up the process and reduce the boilerplate necessary for DI, you can (and should) use dependency injection without a library at least once in your life.

From there I outline the advantages and disadvantages of dependency injection before finally answering the question about whether or not you should use it yourself.
