Shortcut explanation:
The thing is, there are two areas: one area close before the finish line, if you touch it your lap counter goes back one lap, so you find yourself at the end of lap 1 and the lap doesn't count. Second area further from the finish line, the mask grabs you. If the developers did a good job, the first area would stop where the second begins. But apparently the developers thought there is no point to include a small portion on the left side of the track in the second area because nobody can have enough speed to get there. So that square on the left side of the track is not in either area, it's a "no man's land"(NMZ , No Man Zone). If you land there the lap counter doesn't reset, and the mask doesn't grab you, meaning you finish the lap. You need a lot of speed to reach the right area, that's why it wasn't found before.
