Alvin York became the most decorated soldier in the American army for his efforts in the great war, receiving medals from America, France, Italy and Montenegro. The action that give him a medal of honour took place in 1918 in France during the Meuse-Argonne offensive where his unit were ordered to capture German positions. Outnumbered in a machine-gun nest, York was able to take on a whole unit with only a handful of his own men and eventually got their commander to surrender a significant force
