Now in its 35th day, the U.S. government shutdown has tied the record for the longest-ever closure of the federal government, matching the duration of a closure that began in December 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain at a stalemate on finding a government funding solution. Meanwhile, the shutdown impacts are mounting as SNAP funding ran dry over the weekend and flights are delayed around the country amid air traffic controller shortages.
“If we do terminate the Filibuster, we will get EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in History,” Trump asserted in a social media post. But Republicans in control of the Senate are unlikely to heed the president’s call. Many say they fear it would remove their ability to block Democratic legislation should they lose control of the chamber.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said Monday he is “optimistic” a deal to end the more than four-week shutdown could be reached by the end of this week. Both Democrats and Republicans are looking for an off-ramp as the government’s closure inches toward the longest in U.S. history. A group of moderate Senate Democrats have even been quietly gathering to plot how to possibly reopen the federal government.
Earlier Monday, the Trump administration said it will partially provide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits this month, after the program lapsed Saturday due to the shutdown. House Republicans will hold a virtual conference meeting Tuesday, where Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to talk his conference through the status of government shutdown negotiations with the Senate. If the Senate can pass an amended stopgap spending measure by the end of this week, the House would likely return to session next week following more than 45 days of recess.
It’s Election Day in New York City — and the last day for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor. Schumer has given no indication he plans to do so, saying last week he was having conversations with the democratic socialist but declining to offer his public support.
