India is making a major strategic move to secure its northeastern lifeline.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has announced a massive enhancement of the Siliguri corridor, the narrow 20–25 km “chicken’s neck” connecting mainland India to the eight northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

Quadrupling existing railway lines in the corridor.

Two underground rail lines over a 40 km stretch to ensure secure transport.

Railways provide a logistical lifeline, moving cargo equal to hundreds of trucks safely and efficiently.

The corridor is defended by India’s 33 Corps, with 30,000+ soldiers in place to secure this crucial region.

Varanasi–Siliguri High-Speed Rail Corridor announced in the Union Budget 2026–27, slashing travel times and connecting eastern India’s high-speed network.

This strategic project comes amid growing geopolitical tensions, including threats from extremist voices in Bangladesh and the proximity of China, highlighting India’s swift infrastructure response and growing tunneling capabilities.
