The original was first recorded in 1969 for Spiral Staircase album but not released as a single until 1974. The song was re-released in December 2017 in a version featuring McTell with Annie Lennox as a charity single for the CRISIS charity.

I am not sure where I got the last verse from as it doesn't seem to be in the original but I have always sung it!

Interestingly, Ralph McTell took his stage surname from the early 20th century bluesman Blind Willie McTell!
