Marriage or relationships can be very exciting and it can also be sour. It takes two to make relationships work regardless of where you live in the world.
Living and working overseas adds a lot of strain, pressure and stress to most relationships.
It is important to be aware of these issues so you can manage them appropriately.
The main problems that can arise are; Working opposite shifts so couple do not spend enough time together, lack of affection and intimacy, issues around shared responsibility regarding child care and chores in the home including cooking. This can cause a lot of frustration.
Money can be a source of trouble, keeping joint accounts, one person sending money to family members without the knowledge of the other. There can be financial problems where the women are the higher earners, some unwilling to spend more on the home as compared to when the man is the higher earner- usually caters for bills without complaining, In homes where men are the higher earner, there is usually not much complains.
Other issues that can be frustrating include cultural difference, men in our home countries have more say in the home as they are regarded as head of the family and it is same when couples migrate overseas however, there is equality in the home and women have voice and contribute most often to the decision making in the home and some men find this frustrating as this can be perceived as the women abusing the newfound equality and voice. Relationships easily breakdown overseas because some couple find some of the issues difficult cope with, although there is marriage counselling available not many use this option. Back in our home countries there are church elders and families who easily mediate. This option is not readily available when living overseas. Life and happiness in relationships is how both make it, becoming aware of the potential issues can help mitigate the problem.
