Описание к видео Catoctin Creek: A Comparison of 4.1ft. & 5.3ft.

Catoctin Creek: A Comparison the flow rate levels of 4.1ft. & 5.3ft.
Dates:
4.1ft. - July 24, 2018
5.3 ft. - September 9, 2018
Location: Jefferson, Maryland,
Catoctin Creek Park & Nature Center - Mink Hollow

Both four feet and five feet are high water levels (stages) for Catoctin Creek. This video shows the differences in magnitude of flow between 4.1ft. and 5.3ft. within a timeframe of 46 days during the summer of 2018.

It is a very rare sight to see the rushing and powerful flow of Catoctin Creek at 5ft. At this level the sustained flow rate amounts to a brief window of time of approximately three hours at the conclusion of a major precipitation event. During such events, the levels will rise to their peak and substantially fall back down to below 3.0ft well within the course of a night. 5+ feet can be expected to hold or a few hours, making timing very critical if you want to catch it by either camera or kayak. 5 feet is when the alligator sized logs and branches start appear, and the level that I would say that rafting adventures can begin to be had. The rapid at Mink Hollow (II) becomes quite sizable and formidable for playboating at 5.0ft, making for the super rare surfing wave. If you look at my other video from here at 2.0ft, where I am merely scraping my way down, it may be likely to many that the potential and liveliness of this rapid existing here would only come from the imagination of an adventurous, but naive child.

Additional kayaking information:
Catoctin Creek begins to take on more current and less flat water at 3.0ft, and from then up it becomes a thrilling and swift ride, especially above 3.5ft. At 4.0ft eddies become limited and stretches of flat water become nonexistent. The creek is often level with the shoreline in many areas. At 5ft+ Catoctin Creek makes for a very rare and wild ride (with significant hazards to be on the lookout for - such as the rock outcropping yonder the Poffenberger Road bridge and the dangerous 464 bridge pillars, which will likely be jammed up with both visible and submerged logs) that is short lived, often for two to four hours. It is unknown if there are eddies at 5ive feet (most likely above and away from the shoreline). At 5ft+ Catoctin Creek could stand for reputable training for taking on the Savage River at its three annual dam releases of 1,000cfs. 4.0ft would be comparable to parts North Branch of the Potomac River at its four annual dam releases.

Following the terminus of Middle Creek, Catoctin Creek is 27.9 miles long and flows into the Potomac River, close to mile marker 52 along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O canal), where you can see the fascinating Catoctin Creek Aqueduct. The water here comes from as far north as the Catoctin Mountain (Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park), which is the easternmost mountain of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains Range.
