7 LSU Football players named to Phil Steele's preseason All-SEC teams
As the Tigers prepare for the 2024 season, they’re faced with the challenge of dealing with quite a bit of outgoing talent.
Heisman quarterback Jayden Daniels is gone, and he’s joined by top receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. LSU has key pieces to replace on both sides of the ball, and how it manages those positions will prove key as it looks to make the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.
However, the Tigers still have quite a bit of star talent on the roster, and in Phil Steele’s preseason All-SEC teams, a total of seven LSU players were listed among the four teams. Here’s a rundown of each.

WR Kyren Lacy (First Team)
Lacy struggled to get targets in a loaded receiver room, but now that Nabers and Thomas have cleared out, he has the chance to emerge as the team’s top wideout and have a breakout season. He’s coming off a 558-yard, seven-touchdown 2023 season.

OT Will Campbell (First Team)
Campbell is a former five-star recruit who secured the starting left tackle job on Day 1 in 2022 and never looked back. He’s emerged as one of the best offensive linemen in the entire country and could find himself an early first-round pick in next year’s NFL draft.

LB Harold Perkins (First Team)
Perkins had a huge true freshman season in 2022, totaling 7.5 sacks coming off the edge. He was moved off the ball in 2023, however, and the result was a decrease in production. Perkins is a wickedly talented player who has the potential to become one of the best defenders in the country if the Tigers can find the right spot to use him. He’s expected to play off the ball again this year but move to the weak side.

OT Emery Jones (Third Team)
While Campbell gets much of the attention along the offensive line, Jones has been right up there among the league’s best tackles, as well. After some struggles as a true freshman starting in 2022, Jones improved quite a bit last fall and became a reliable starter on the right side. Entering 2024, LSU likely has the best tackle duo in the nation.

Greg Penn III (Third Team)
After ranking second on the team in tackles last year with 89, Penn returns for his senior season with the Tigers. He has started 26 games over the past two seasons and brings a much-needed veteran presence to a defense that loses several key players from a unit that already struggled last season.

Returner Zavion Thomas (Third Team)
Thomas could make an impact on offense for the Tigers as well at receiver after totaling 500 yards for Mississippi State last season, but he’s expected to be particularly impactful in the return game after totaling 365 punt return yards and 297 kick return yards and two total touchdowns in two seasons with the Bulldogs. He was named to the Third Team as both a punt and kick returner.

LS Slade Roy (Third Team)
Since arriving as a transfer from East Carolina in 2022, Roy has become a reliable long snapper on both punts and field goals for the Tigers. He has served as LSU’s primary long snapper in all 27 games over the last two years.

What Garrett Nussmeier's passing chart tells us about 2024 expectations for LSU
Garrett Nussmeier will be a first-time starter in 2024, but the hype train is rolling. Nussmeier is eighth in FanDuel’s Heisman odds. Athlon named Nussmeier a Tier 1 Heisman contender in its 2024 preview magazine, writing he “has big shoes to fill replacing Jayden Daniels, but he’ll be running a system that just produced a Heisman winner.”

Below are the 25 high school football prospects with the highest On3 NIL Valuations, as of June 25.
1. QB Bryce Underwood — $1.3M
School: Belleville (Mich.)
On3 Industry Ranking: No. 1 NATL.
Status: Committed to LSU
Scouting Summary: “The early top quarterback prospect in the 2025 cycle. A top arm talent and plus athlete who is among the more physically-gifted quarterback prospects in recent cycles. Measured at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds with a 10-inch hand the spring after his sophomore season. Owns a big-time arm with the ability to drive the ball with velocity to all levels of the field. Throws a very tight spiral that amplifies the velocity on the tail of his passes. Has shown advanced nuance and skill as a passer early on.
