In a study on the Eiffel Tower, published in Paris in 1889, Gustave Eiffel makes a flattering revelation about a skilled Romanian engineer. He says that the famous symbol of Paris, and therefore of France, could not have been erected so quickly, in the record time of only two years and four months, if a decade before its inauguration a Romanian had not carried out a revolutionary engineering project.

In the study mentioned, entitled ‘Communication sur les travaux de la tour de 300 m’, it is stated that the Eiffel Tower was built using a technical system invented by the Romanian engineer Gheorghe Pănculescu (1844–1922). In 1869, Pănculescu, as a graduate of the Zurich Polytechnic, was recommended to Eiffel by Vasile Alecsandri.

At first, Eiffel hired him in the company he managed, but Pănculescu distinguished himself as one of the best specialists, a real ace when it came to problems of material strength, calculations and dimensioning. Gheorghe Pănculescu eventually became head of Eiffel’s most important department. The Romanian came to the Frenchman’s attention after he drew up the plans for the Predeal-Ploiesti railway, which was completed by one of Eiffel’s associates, Gouilloux. Pănculescu then invented a special system for the French working on the Prahova road that used a new method of mounting the rails on sleepers outside the space of the railway. With the Romanian’s miracle method, the line was completed in less than a year. This attracted the attention of Gustave Eiffel, who decided to come and visit Pănculescu, who also hosted him at Vălenii de Munte.

So the Romanian engineer’s success led Eiffel to come to Romania. He arrived in Ploiesti in May 1879 to see for himself how the system initiated by Pănculescu had worked.
