Kizzmekia Corbett, the National Institute of Health's lead scientist for coronavirus vaccine research and she is an African American born in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina and grew up on Hillsborough, a rural town in North Carolina, where she had a large family of step-siblings and foster siblings.

In October 2014, Corbett became a research fellow, working as a viral immunologist, at the NIH. Her research is in viral pathogenesis and host immunity. She specifically focuses on development of novel vaccines for coronaviridae.Her early research considered the development of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) vaccine antigens.

Now a team of scientists led by Corbett, 34, was poised to move to first-stage trials for a coronavirus vaccine.

Corbett's team began first-stage clinical trials of a COVID-19 vaccine, the first of its kind in the world and the fastest progress ever toward a possible vaccine for a novel pathogen. If she is successful COVID-19 could become a preventable disease.
