A 16-year-old girl, identified as Violet Gustafson, has died after being hit by a car in North Ridgeville on Monday evening.

Police say the teen was struck on Lorain Road near McDonald's at around 6 p.m.

"The members of North Ridgeville Police Department would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Violet’s family and friends during this difficult time," said North Ridgeville police in a Facebook post.

Paramedics administered first aid and the girl was eventually taken to University Hospitals St. John Medical Center in Westlake, but died there from her injuries.

In a letter to parents and staff obtained by 3News, North Ridgeville City Schools confirmed that the girl was a junior at North Ridgeville High School who also attended the Lorain County Joint Vocational School.

"This unimaginable loss has deeply affected our entire school community, and our hearts are heavy as we grieve together," the district wrote. "Please keep this student's family in your thoughts and hold them close in your hearts as they face this devastating loss. In times like these, the strength of our Ranger community becomes especially important. Let us continue to show care, compassion, and support for one another in the days ahead."
