There’s budget travel, and then there’s this.

We took the cheapest possible route from Bangkok to Europe. First leg: Bangkok to Shanghai on Shanghai Airlines. Sounds simple, but the transit desk was closed, which meant leaving the airport, officially entering China, and finding a place to sleep. We ended up in a nearby hotel for just £18 a night. Nothing fancy, but the staff made us feel like family. They cooked my noodles, handed us free bottles of water, and even carried the food up to our room.

A late-night chat with a local guy about noodles turned into one of those quiet, human moments you don’t expect to find when you’re just trying to get to the next flight.

Next up: the shortest flight we’ve ever taken: Shanghai to Ningbo, just 24 minutes in the air, on a Dreamliner. Then came the big one: Ningbo to Budapest, 12 hours of movies, meals, and drifting in and out of sleep.

We reviewed every flight. All in, it was a 29-hour journey across continents—and somehow, it didn’t feel like a waste of time at all.
