Mitama Matsuri at Yasukuni Shrine, Tokyo.

First organized in 1947, Mitama Matsuri festival is part of the Obon celebrations in Tokyo.
Obon is a period to honor the souls of the deceased, and Yasukuni Shrine is dedicated to the commemorations of soldiers who died for Japan during the War.

Despite Yasukuni Shrine's nationalistic fame, the festival itself does not
include political aspects, and focuses on traditional customs, in a relaxed atmosphere.


Mitama Matsuri has been held every year from July 13 through 16,
since 1947 and attracts around 300,000 visitors.

(However, due to covid-19 outbreak, the festival has been held in a very simple manner.)


About 30,000 large and small lights donated by bereaved families,
comrades, and worshipers are listed.


Additional information:
It is believed that each year during Obon, the ancestors' spirits
return to this world in order to visit their relatives.

The Mitama Matsuri lantern is a wish for gratitude to the spirits and
the realization of a peaceful world, and anyone can apply for it.
(¥12,000 /$120 for a large lantern; ¥3,000/$30 for a small;an application to the shrine beforehand).
