As the month draws to a close we've had the worst August in terms of weather in four years on the allotment. The combination of cold and wet have been perfect for allowing blight to spread, which has wiped out all of our tomatoes. The fruits on the peppers are hardly forming before rotting, or getting attacked by pests, then fall off the plants before reaching maturity. As for the aubergines, it was a bad year to attempt those for the first time. But on a positive note the lettuce and beans have loved the cooler weather, as have the brassicas. Our sweetcorn has produced the most number of cobs we've ever had but they're still not ripe yet, thanks to the late season and lack of warmth. At least we got to try our first pluot fruit, even if there were only two of them. Sadly none of our other fruit trees gave us a crop but the raspberries are doing well, and the tip-layer of Waldo the thornless blackberry has taken successfully. The dahlias and other flowers are putting on a display and brightening up the allotment with giant sunflowers adding a bit of height. Here's hoping for an Indian summer in September and October!
