BBC Studios and Amazon Prime video bring us the screen adaptation of the novel “Good Omens” written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Milk VFX did the visual effects, supplying 650 shots for this series, which they decided to tackle as if it were a 6-hour film, rather than a six-episode series.

“Good omens,” tells the story of an angel and a demon who join forces to find and control the antichrist, and avoid the destruction of the earth because they, “actually quite like living there!”
And with this plot, you know you’re going to need a lot of visual effects.

CG Bentley
At one point the demon Crowley drives his vintage Bentley through London at 90 mph and later on the M25 while it’s on fire. The team knew they was no way they could film this so a CG model was made. They did a highly detailed 3D scan of a 1934 Bentley 3.5 Derby Coupe and created a CG asset. The real Bentley with old-school rear-projection was used for the “in-car” shots and Milk did some beautiful transitions from CG asset to “in-car” shots.

Berwick Street
The angel Aziraphale’s book shop is located in London’s Soho, filming on location was impossible so the construction team built a 15 by 65-foot street-level set replicating Berwick street. They used giant 20 by 20 green screens that were positioned and held by a Manitou rotating telehandler and then photo scanned Berwick street to get a basis for their CG model for the set extension.

Satan and Co.
The VFX team had to create a multitude of different creatures from a hell hound for which they used a Great Dane and CG model of a demonic head, to a Kraken which was entirely computer-generated. When creating satan the team decided he had to be instantly recognizable and so had to be red but instead of two horns they designed a crown of horns which gave him a distinguishing look. When they found out that Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast as the voice of satan they consulted the video reference of the actor reading the lines and mapped his specific facial features.

Childish VFX
Milk VFX had to create a huge amount of effects for the angel or the demon, they did this whilst bearing in mind that for supernatural beings magic is normal so their effects were made to be realistic. When doing the effects for the 11-year-old antichrist they decided that the effects needed to be more childlike and humorous. an alien spaceship imagined by an 11-year-old needed to look like an alien spaceship imagined by an 11-year-old, and when some cute fluffy bunnies get violent, they...get...violent!
