Every single unique track from the Sonic 2 Prototypes [Oscilloscope View]

Описание к видео Every single unique track from the Sonic 2 Prototypes [Oscilloscope View]

Finally got this finished. Probably my biggest video to date. (Not for long though probably)
I wanted it done yesterday but realized it took longer than I thought.
The next Sonic-related video will be on the Sonic 3 1103 Prototype tracks and it will most likely take longer than this one.
Anyways, onto the important bits.

This video contains nearly every single track from the Sonic 2 Prototypes, most of them from Simon Wai, except one, which is the invincibility theme, which comes from the 0821 prototype.
Some tracks were excluded due to them already being in their final forms, or because they sounded indifferent to their final counterparts.

~ Video Chapters ~

0:00 Title
The title screen had not been worked on yet, so what is left over is Sonic 1's title theme.
0:09 Emerald Hill/Green Hill
While most of the song sounds the same compared to the final version, there are a few differences. Instead of a bell instrument in the background, there's a whinier synth. Allegedly, the percussion is a bit different as well, but I can't be sure if that's true.
1:40 Chemical Plant/Genocide City
Nearly everything is pretty much identical to the final version. However, the first pitch bend 2 minutes and 36 seconds in is performed a lot later and is quite jarring to hear the first time if you're an avid listener of CPZ like me. The channels are also arranged differently, most notably, the bass at Channel 5 instead of 2.
3:38 Aquatic Ruin/Neo Green Hill
This one sounds quite interesting. The bass patch is different, Channel 4 and 5 are dedicated to the piano backing, and SQR 1 and 2 are dedicated to the whistle as well.
4:59 Casino Night
One of both my favorites and the more compositionally interesting tracks, being that it's more resemblant to the version from Masa's demo tape. From the slower tempo to the more noticeably garnished drum beat, this makes it a complete upgrade to the final, especially with the last part.
It's a bit of a shame this didn't make it into the final cut.
7:22 Hill Top
Another one that is more resemblant to the Masa tapes. This one is a lot slower (which suits the zone better) and the supposed "muted trumpet" instrument—from the Masa tape version—sounds even more like a harmonica here. The PSG also has a role, mainly in beefing up the backing instruments. The channels are also arranged differently.
9:03 Mystic Cave/Dust Hill
Everything is practically identical except for the tempo which is a bit slower. The channels are arranged differently, with the bass at Channel 4 instead of 2, and the brass at Channels 2 and 5 instead of 4 and 5.
11:06 Oil Ocean (Unused)
Yet another one that is also more resemblant to the Masa tapes.
This one's a bit slower but still faster than the demo tape. The instruments also sound a smidge more ethnic than the final, and the track is entirely mono with no panning. The slower tempo does give it more of the Arabic feel they were going for, but I would prefer the final a bit more than this.
12:49 Metropolis/Wood
As if it couldn't get any more disorienting for casual players, here comes what it could've sounded like if it wasn't redone. The percussion is a lot more different here with the clap and record scratch samples being swapped of their places. The instrumentation is very, VERY different, with electric guitars and saw synths dominating a lot of the composition and giving it a more "metallic" feel.
Although I like this track, it was probably for the best for it to be redone.
14:26 Sky Chase
Mostly identical to the final except for the slower tempo and the arrangement of the channels.
15:54 Wing Fortress (Volume Warning)
GOOD LORD MY RIGHT EAR
It's pretty similar to the final, only the mixing seems to not have been finalized.
17:35 Death Egg
What an absolutely ruthless song, it's just teasing you with the ring instrument while there are zero rings to be found. The empty instrumentation suits the zone pretty well with Robotnik's psychology and the lackluster corridor.
19:07 Robotnik
Everything just got more serious. The instrumentation is a lot heavier.
20:24 Final Boss
Everything is basically like the final except that half the timpanis are replaced with the kick sample.
22:20 Stage Select/Drowning
A lot slower, the snare replaced with the kick, and different instrumentation.
22:51 Emerald 2P
Identical to the final but slower.
24:34 Casino 2P/Oil Ocean
Same as Emerald 2P.
26:17 Mystic 2P/Hidden Palace
The instrumentation is a bit less full.
28:15 Invincibility (0821)
It's audibly the same throughout up until the ending which is completely different from the final version.
28:42 Super Sonic/Invincibility
This is the last track which resembles the Masa tape more. The only difference is the alarm synth hard-panned to the right at the beginning.
