He just stared

Every prayer a half‑drunk song
But we pushed and we shoved and hung on

By the time the sun climbed over the stones
We were bruised
We were bruised right down to our bones
Yet the monk brought bread
And he called us “knights”
We just grinned through the mud
Through our missing tights
Those bandits limped off with their pride in a sack
